In September, the Ipiranga Museum hosts a visit. “"Independence celebrated in monuments and images"”, which invites the public to reflect on the different ways of representing and celebrating the Independence and history of Brazil.
Along the route, the monument-building itself and works featured in the exhibitions To Understand the Museum e A history of Brazil They help to discuss how monuments, paintings, and sculptures are also documents of the period in which they were produced.
Among the examples discussed are representations of Dom Pedro I, the bandeirantes (Brazilian explorers), and figures such as Maria Quitéria and Maria Leopoldina, in addition to paintings. Independence or Death!, by Pedro Américo.
The aim is to observe the choices made in constructing these images and to understand the values and societal projects they express. The visit also brings into discussion the protagonism attributed to certain characters and groups, the silences produced by these narratives, and the possibility of constructing other perspectives on the Independence process and the history of the country.
The tour is guided in Portuguese on Saturdays and Sundays, and in Libras (Brazilian Sign Language) on Sundays, with tickets available 10 minutes before the start of the activity.
