Between October 6th and December 8th, the Ipiranga Museum offers an extension course. “"Maps and texts in the construction of History"”, taught by Professor Jorge Pimentel Cintra. Classes will be held in person on Tuesdays, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, in the Museum Auditorium.
Aimed at university-educated individuals, the course proposes to understand how the dialogue between maps, texts, and other historical sources can contribute to the reconstruction of processes of occupation and transformation of Brazilian territory.
Based on case studies, different possibilities for historical research will be presented, combining cartography, travelogues, archival documents, images, and other sources.
The program covers topics such as:
- The occupation of the Brazilian coast and the formation of the hereditary captaincies.
- Expeditions and processes of territorial expansion
- Exploration and occupation of the Amazon
- Cartography of Dutch Brazil
- Monsoon routes
- Historic routes between São Paulo, Santos, Itu and Minas Gerais.
The classes also present methodologies used to identify and reconstruct ancient routes by comparing maps and historical documents.
Among the studies analyzed are the routes from São Paulo to Santos and accounts related to Independence, Fernão Dias' journey towards Minas Gerais, and the relationships between historical documentation, oral tradition, literature, and the construction of memory.
With a total workload of 40 hours, the course offers 200 vacancies, filled in order of registration. The fee is R$50. They will also be granted 20 free places, Ten places are reserved for public school teachers, upon presentation of an updated payslip, and ten places are reserved for USP postgraduate students, upon presentation of proof of enrollment.
To receive the certificate, it is necessary to have a minimum attendance of 75% and meet the evaluation criteria stipulated in the course.
