Do you know Liberdade beyond the lanterns and references to Japanese culture? In this activity guided by sign language interpretation, the public explores the three sections of the exhibition. Liberty: a plural neighborhood to learn about the stories, memories, and conflicts that have transformed the neighborhood over time.
The tour begins in Liberdade during the 18th and 19th centuries, when the region brought together spaces linked to punishment, burial, and social control, such as Largo da Forca, the Cemitério dos Aflitos (Cemetery of the Afflicted), and the Capela dos Aflitos (Chapel of the Afflicted). The visit also addresses the history of Chaguinhas and the presence of Black, Indigenous, enslaved, and freed people in the territory.
Next, the activity presents the urban changes that occurred between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The public learns about aspects of Japanese immigration and the arrival of other groups who came to live, work, and create institutions in the neighborhood. The visit discusses how some of these presences gained prominence, while others were erased or relegated to the background.
The activity is free. Tickets must be collected at the Reception area, next to the ticket office, 10 minutes before the start of the visit.
