The workshop My neighborhood has history! The project invites participants to create flags inspired by the banners of samba schools. The idea is to use colors, designs, words, and symbols to represent the stories and experiences of the neighborhood where each person lives.
The main reference point for this activity is the Lavapés Samba School, founded by Madrinha Eunice in 1936 in the Liberdade neighborhood. Madrinha Eunice played an important role in organizing the São Paulo carnival and in promoting Black culture in the city. Lavapés also became a space for meeting, remembering, and strengthening the bonds between its members and the community.
The workshop begins with a guided tour of the exhibition "Liberdade: Bairro Plural" (Freedom: A Plural Neighborhood), where the public is invited to reflect on the disputes over memory in the Liberdade neighborhood.
Next, each participant chooses what they want to represent in their creation. It could be an important person, a celebration, a song, a food, a landscape, a meeting place, or another memory connected to their neighborhood. The activity starts with questions like: What makes my neighborhood special? What stories are part of this place? What symbol could represent it?
Using fabrics, paper, ribbons, letters, drawings, and other materials, participants create their own flags. In the end, each creation presents a different way of telling the story of a territory and recognizing the bonds of identity and belonging built by those who live there.
The activity is free. Tickets must be collected in the temporary exhibition room 10 minutes before the workshop begins.
