The course starts from a central idea: the building that houses a collection also plays a part in its conservation. Its location, materials, state of maintenance, ventilation, climate control, and the ways in which the spaces are used can protect the collections or increase the risk of deterioration.
Preventive conservation encompasses planned actions to avoid or reduce damage before restoration of each object becomes necessary. Therefore, this training provides tools for observing the building and its surroundings, recognizing risk factors, and defining preservation priorities compatible with the realities of museums, archives, libraries, and other institutions that house cultural and scientific collections.
This introductory course bridges the gap between knowledge in the fields of conservation, architecture, engineering, and management. The training will be conducted in a hybrid format, with recorded lectures presenting the concepts of each stage, while seven live remote sessions will be dedicated to discussing the content, clarifying doubts, and guiding the final project. The program also includes an in-person series of technical visits and a final presentation in a hybrid format.
This is the fifth edition of the first module of the course "Preventive conservation of collections: the impact of the building and its surroundings", coordinated by Ana Paula Nascimento, from the Museu Paulista of USP.
