On the day September 26, Starting at 2 PM, the Ipiranga Museum will hold a workshop to reflect on critical and anti-racist strategies adopted in its educational practices. The aim is to discuss how to mediate works and narratives influenced by colonial legacies without reproducing stereotypes, absences, and erasures.
The activity takes place on the third day of the seminar. Mediação e educação em diálogo: a construção do negro como sujeito. This initiative is the result of a partnership between the institution, the Tomie Ohtake Institute, and the Afro-Brazilian Museum.
The workshop at the Ipiranga Museum addresses issues surrounding the representation of the Black population in museums and cultural institutions. Historically, these representations have been marked by stereotypes that associate Black people with hypersexualization and the denial of their knowledge, cultures, and autonomy.
In recent decades, the advancement of debates on race and racism, driven primarily by Black movements, has contributed to important changes in this scenario, including... Law No. 10.639/2003, which made the teaching of African and Afro-Brazilian History and Culture mandatory.
This movement also broadened the presence and revision of the trajectories of Black figures who were fundamental to the country's history. Among them are André Rebouças, in engineering; Joaquim Pinto de Oliveira, known as Tebas, in architecture; and artists such as Mestre Valentim, Maria Auxiliadora, Yêdamaria, and Maria dos Santos Reinbolt. These new interpretations contribute to recognizing Black participation as a constitutive part of Brazil's own history.
During the workshop, participants will tour some of the Ipiranga Museum's long-term exhibitions. The tour will be organized around three themes: counterpoints, in the exhibition Imagined pasts; absences and omissions, in A History of Brazil; and attendance, in To Understand the Museum, Worlds of Work and Collecting: Images and Objects.
At the end of the activity, the educators will lead a discussion circle in Studio 1 based on the work. Dirty hands, by Paulo du Sanctus, recently added to the Museum's collection.
