Cinema at the Museum – 3rd Edition

On the day March 7th, to the 3pm, The Museum is holding the third edition of Cinema at the Museum, with the pre-premiere from the movie Women Artists, Subverting Submission, directed by Tata Amaral in partnership with Vera Hamburger. The session is free and is part of the special programming from the Museum that marks International Women's Day.

The film revisits the trajectory and production of Brazilian women artists from the 19th and early 20th centuries who, although recognized in their time, were progressively erased from art history. The work highlights three pioneers who defied the limitations imposed on women in the artistic field: Abigail de Andrade (1864–1890), awarded at the Imperial Salon of 1884; Georgina de Albuquerque (1885–1962), painter and teacher who became the first woman to preside over the Academy of Fine Arts; and Julieta de França (1870–1951), sculptor and teacher, the first woman to win the prize for travel abroad from the National School of Fine Arts. The artist left an album entitled Souvenir of an artistic career [Memories of my artistic career], which is part of the Museum's collection. With a leather and fabric cover, the volume brings together newspaper clippings related to his career — exhibitions, reviews, public commissions — as well as letters, photographs, diplomas and certificates.

By retracing these trajectories, the film proposes a reflection on visibility, authorship, and memory, questioning the mechanisms that have silenced female productions over time and inviting the public to rethink the history of Brazilian art from new perspectives.

Following the screening, there will be a Q&A session with guests José Roberto de França Arruda, responsible for bringing fundamental pieces of Julieta de França's work to the public; and art historian Ana Paula Cavalcanti Simioni, author of the book. Profession: Artist: Brazilian Academic Women Painters and Sculptors, which inspired the documentary; actress Claudia Schapira; and historian Douglas Fasolato. The discussion will be moderated by Liliane Braga, a postdoctoral researcher in History and Material Culture at the Ipiranga Museum, and author of the book “Afro-Diasporic Cinemas in the Face of Racialized Regimes of Representation” (Educ, 2026).

A production of Tangerina Entretenimento, “Women Artists, Subverting Submission” has the support of the Arte 1 channel and institutional support from the Municipal Secretariat of Culture and Tourism of Belém. The investment comes from the Audiovisual Sector Fund (FSA), managed by the National Cinema Agency – Ancine, in partnership with the Ministry of Culture (MinC).
