Far more than simple graphic representations, maps are visual testimonies of how different eras imagined, measured, and disputed territories. In the course History of Cartography in Brazil, the professor Jorge Pimentel Cintra It presents a comprehensive overview of the evolution of cartographic techniques and concepts, from the ancient world to the digital age, focusing on the territorial formation of Brazil.
Starting with practical exercises in reading and interpreting historical maps, participants will be introduced to the transversality of cartography, exploring connections with literature, astronomy, navigation, iconography, and the mentalities of each period. The classes will cover topics ranging from the birth of scientific cartography in the Greek world, through the great navigations, the Letter of Master John, the maps of the hereditary captaincies and the Treaty of Tordesillas, to the challenges of contemporary digital cartography.
The course also investigates the toponymy recorded on 16th and 17th-century maps and its relationship with indigenous languages, revealing how graphic representations carry both technical information and historical narratives.
Each session focuses on a central theme accompanied by exercises, aiming to promote map reading and encourage in-depth study of this area of knowledge. The activity is geared towards individuals with a university degree and will award certification to those who achieve at least 75% attendance.
