Catholic Sacred Art, Collectibles and Museums in Brazil
This course presents a historical overview of the collecting of Catholic sacred art in Brazil and the creation of the first museums dedicated to this theme. It seeks to problematize the definition of "Brazilian sacred art" and identify the differences and similarities between public and private collections, as well as their reverberations in the creation, apogee, and crisis of museums of sacred art. The course includes a mandatory study trip to Minas Gerais to visit museums with distinct approaches in terms of collection formation, typology, purpose, and exhibition strategies.
